After struggling to stay motivated to strength train, I decided to try personal training with Georgie, whom I respect as a great runner and athlete. Every runner knows strength training matters—most of us just choose to ignore it. I definitely did. Then I signed up for a 50-mile ultramarathon! Up to that point, I had only done a few marathons. To get a feel for how my body would cope, I ran a 50KM a few months before the big day. That’s when I realised just how physically weak I was. The muscles in my back were screaming in pain towards the end. There was no way I would get through 50 miles without some serious strength work.

I wasn’t confident going straight into a gym—worried I would injure myself by doing things wrong. That’s when I heard about Georgie’s PT sessions. I already knew her from my running club, where she leads various training sessions. She’s one of those people who truly cares about your progress and puts their heart into helping you improve.

I explained my situation, and she was fully on board to help me train and build the strength I needed for race day. With only a couple of months to go, she created a focused training plan to build strength quickly, while keeping injury risk low. Because Georgie is a marathon runner herself, she knew exactly which workout would be the best for a runner. The sessions were challenging but genuinely enjoyable. If I had tried doing them on my own, I would have quit halfway—but Georgie kept me motivated and pushed me beyond what I thought I could do.

Then came race day: the South Downs Way 50 Mile...It was a perfect race!. I felt strong throughout—no pain in my back or legs. I completed the race in 11 hours and 30 minutes, with a sprint finish. I even had enough energy left to run another half marathon distance… so I celebrated by picking my wife up in my arms 💪🙂
